Companies have been choosing between two high-level architectures: data warehouses and data lakehouses. In data warehouses, data is stored by the warehouse in proprietary formats that can only be read by that data warehouse. In contrast, a data lakehouse is an architecture in which the data is primarily stored in the customer’s own cloud object storage (S3, ADLS, etc.) in open formats, and then processed/queried by one or more engines.
